I love the idea that Sherlock was indeed written for a contemporary audience back then, and it is only logical to film it for a contemporary audience now. Holmes was a very modern man in his time. It's not about the fog and coaches and top hats: it's about a brilliant man using science to solve puzzling crimes. Kudos to Moffat and Gatiss for realizing that that concept could work naturally in all periods. They managed to make an original adaptation based on the original books, without straying.

@WaterbenderKatara22 Yes, he is a genius. Though he already has his experiences and earned medals, Sherlock is my favourites, as it seems so real him. Unbelievable. PS: There is a theory that we all kind of fulfill the name we are given.... Deep sigh.....
