Jehan Alain (1911-1940) was first and foremost famous as an organist and composer of highly original and evocative organ music.
He was also a keen pianist and composer for the piano before his tragic, untimely death during WW2 - a huge loss to the world of music.
Thanks to the efforts of a very few pianists, this music has been championed and it comes across as being indeed original, basking in the aftermath of impressionism, but aware of the classical forms and of the innovative musical progressions of the time.
These forty variations are each based on a short melodic phrase, which is itself simply a pattern of sequences. Each piece has its own unique character and the composer named (sometimes quite bizarrely!) each variation of the theme.
