AURANGABAD: January 29, 2010. Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhii hitting hard on corruption said the need was to bring in the required change in the political system by way of democratization of organizational structures.
On the issue of terrorism, he categorically said that no religion in the world promotes it and all sorts of terrorism should be treated like a serious crime. On the latest incident of killing of a senior government official allegedly by oil mafia gang in the state, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said all measures should be put in place to ensure the same should not get repeated in future and asserted that the state chief minister being committed to this effect.
While addressing the media here on Saturday morning- the concluding day of his three-day visit to Maharashtra, he said the country was growing at 9 % per cent growth rate. .
"We are growing very fast and thus, huge money is also being generated and we need to ensure that money should be there for education, jobs, among all other measures, for all, including the marginalized sections of the society," he told the media. And, this could be achieved only by changing the political structure in the country by opening the doors for entry of the youth in a democratic way, he added.
Further deliberating on the issue, he said that there are many shortcomings in the political system in the country. And, among them, the biggest flaw is that there is no democracy in political organizations and doors are not open for those keen to enter on self-merits.
"Common people think politics is corrupt and it is not operating the way it should be. The political system as it exists today is based on nominations and on 'top-down' structure and has no entry for the youth," he said, as a matter-of-fact.
Lots of people complain about corruption but only a few talks about required changes to get rid of the same, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said. To a query about nepotism in politics, he replied that only his party's frontal organization Youth Congress (YC) and National Students' Union of India (NSUI) have begun democratization of their respective set-ups by way of conducting organizational elections.
"In Maharashtra, there are 75,000 polling booths for election to YC organization and the elections are fair and anyone could go there with camera to see and record the proceedings," asserted Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi. Citing the case of Kerala, he said thousands of young and new faces have joined YC by way getting elected and many of them are playing great roles in the panchayat polls.
Every two years, the process would be repeated so that those keen to join politics would be motivated enough after seeing those already having entered our political organization through free and fair elections, on personal credentials, he further added.
