50 year old woman learns to ride a bike. Has a crash but gets back on the bike.

Here's what helped me. Found a bike with a seat low enough to stand flat footed on the bike. This overcame my fears of falling since I could just stand up if I lost my balance. Took off the pedals and walked around on the bike like a scooter till I got my balance with longer and longer steps and push offs. This video was the day I put the pedals back on. Good Luck!

  • I've ridden since I was four, but I really really admire your courage. Very good idea to practice without the pedals first. It's about 90% confidence and the rest is practice. Well done. Maybe later when you get very skilled, you will like to raise the saddle (a lot).

  • @thebluebell89 i hear ya. i'm 24 and never learned to ride a bike as a kid. Used to love being on my bike with training wheels as a 4 yr old but then i had a bad fall when taking the training wheels off and refused to ride for the rest of my childhood. i'm 24 now and feel embarrassed that i never learned. i think im gonna make it my new years resolution to learn in 2012!

  • I'm 40 and have not ridden since 1985, and at that time I had gone 2 or 3 years without riding and it took a short while to adjust again as I was a little wobbly etc. Not sure how well I would do now as my balance is a bit crap these days, although I am still the same weight and body shape as in my teens. I am thinking about getting a bike and riding again for pleasure though, but need to be able to transport it in my car to nicer places, where I can ride in clean air & beautiful surroundings.

  • Im 12 and I got a painful cut while attempting to learn how to ride a bike in the park. ._. Im gonna try again this Sunday. :P

  • @IIproductionsII - It is when you've been doing it since you were 5, but when you reach maturity without ever getting on a bike, it's like learning a foreign language.

Google "Egocentric" while you're at it.

  • @kaote hey, how's that going so far? I'm 27 and I just got mine too but I'm not happy about it. Long story cut short, my mother (yes, not embarrassed to say so) bought it for me and it was bulky, couldn't refund but I could only exchange. Took a foldable one instead with those gears, whatever nonsense (all I wanted was a simple vintage bike!) Got to hate modernization for that..ha, I tried cycling in the dark (yes, incognito) but its been zig zagging away hm..its terribly heavy too

  • @thebluebell89 Good for you bluebell! And to hell with that bozzo who insulted you, you're a star!

  • @IIproductionsII You're a prick, a disgrace to humanity

  • @thebluebell89 Please state where I called you a dumbass.

  • @IIproductionsII So I'm dumbass because at 22, I am getting my first bike on monday? Since my family could never afford one?

I hope you never find yourself in a position of disadvantage. Given your attitude.
