  • Maestresse Shantabai's light romantic lyric , Kishori's vibrant voice, and Hridaynath's vivacious composition! A rare feast, this particular combination would only match what the mangeshkar sibs have brought up in light music. Not to be heard by us again! Only thing that hurt, SJ, that Palas is not banyan! Palas or palaash has that rare fiery red flora with sparser trifid foliage which the somberer banyan can't match! This has a bearing on the poetry, a banyan forest is not quite the same ..

  • @sumanniv You are absolutely right Palas is NOT Banyan tree ! My blunder. "bhagna shivalay parisar nirjan, palas tarunche daat pudhe ban" I had image of Angkor vat in my mind with Banyan tree growing into Shiva's sculpture. I should have checked Wikipedia and realized the mistake. Thanks for correcting me.

  • Fabulous. One of the most beautiful pieces of music I ever heard. It reminds very much of the Marathi Bhavgeet that Kishori sings on her CD "A journey 1". Arte these so-called Marathi Bhavgeets or Abhangas? Is there more of this? Does anyone know raga-tala of this piece?

  • @WIMVDMEER This is "Bhavgeet" a light musical poems, not necessarily based on any ragas. Abhangas are religious songs, this song is not. This song is probably based on raga Kafi or sindura as per internet source.

  • What a feast! God bless you for the upload. Thank you so much!

  • @sumanniv Suman, while you're correct in pointing out the error, i would like to stop just at just the depictiion of that setting of a neglected, ancient lonely place deep inside a jungle - and she continues relentlessly unmindful of the fear such places have in our mind!!

  • A master piece by greatest poet, composer and singer! Thanks a lot for a well made video as well :)

  • quite right about the fiery hues of Palash! many marathi poems allude to that. just remembered the Shakeel Badayuni ghazal (Begum Akhtar's rendition the best in this universe!) "Mera azm itna bulund hai ki paraye sholon ka dar nahin; Mujhe khauf aatish-e-gul se hai, ye kahin chaman ko jala na de!"this fiery palash bloom is the aatish-e -gul which could put the entire forest on fire with its red hues!

  • What a wonderful composition! Thanks for including the translation for non-marathi speakers.

@sumanniv The palas flower is also a recurring theme in Bengali songs and poetry, related to spring and love.

As an aside, in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharata, Vidur hints about the Lashagriha by reminding Yudhisthir that when the Palas blooms, the hills look like they are covered with fire!
