BREST, 22 June (BelTA) -- Brest Hero-Fortress Memorial became an international memorable events center on 21 June to mark the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Apart from thousands of Brest residents, attending the event were 45 foreign delegations, BelTA has learnt.
People dressed as Soviet soldiers attend an event marking the 70th anniversary of the start of the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) in Brest, Belarus, June 21, 2011.
An atmosphere of the last peaceful evening was recreated in Brest including the Brest Fortress: brass bands and gramophones played prewar music and songs. Towards morning peaceful noises went quiet. At 4 a.m. the citadel started from shell bursts as it did 70 years ago. The events of that day were reenacted accurate to the minute.
The memorable events in the Brest Fortress will continue on 22 June with an unveiling ceremony of a sculpture "To Border Heroes, Women and Children Stepped into Immortality with Courage". The ceremony will be followed by a concert requiem organized by the Union State Permanent Committee and the culture ministries of Belarus and Russia
