It might be that you tried this as well, but I'd consider lighting only the white squares. Because of the diffuser, some light would bleed to the dark, so they'd be somewhat lighted, but I think the effect might be more dramatic.

You can dim all lights to get better concentration when playing....

The AC power adapter that I used was from an old battery operated portable TV. Rated at 17 watts (12 VDC 850 mA) it can handle this many LEDs. Don't use a power adapter that is too small. If the power cord feels hot disconnect it immediately. Use the LED calculator at ledcalc.com to calculate the size resistors needed for your LEDs and the circuit's total current consumption needed for the power adapter. Always look across the board and never look directly into the lights.
