I tried to turn a country ballad into a lament for the loss of the Newfoundland Railway as it pertained to Port aux Basques. I was there on that July 2, 1969 morning when the last passenger train disappeared around Grand Bay Bottom. I watched as railway oldtimers stooped to pick up squashed souvenir coins from the tracks.
