The previous comments is nothing more than my opinion, and I would like to know what other viewers who are particular in jazz think of the stance and duty of the drummer. I know it is often the case with Sadao to shift tempo during a song, namely that is his style.
Thanks for ther reply! I listened to this again after a long time. This time, drummings sound much better than before, IMO. Sadao is the leader here and bass and piano is following Sadao's tempo-shift. Traditionally, no rythm change throughout the tune was a priciple, but Sadao, the band leader changes tempo to make the music sound dynamic...just my opinion......
@ja121386 I beg to respectfully disagree with your comment. As a jazz drummer, I was always taught that when the tempo was established, it was my job to maintain that tempo, even if the soloist or any other player tried to "rush" it. If any piece sounds "loose", it's often because the other players are pushing the established tempo beyond where it should be. Sorry, just my opinion. Cheers!
that it's Cuban Jazz School...... Ohhhhhhhh Yeahhhhhhhhhh

I know what you mean. I like this style as it makes the performance very exciting and agresive.

Watanabe Sadao awlays plays ahead of the beat. It makes an uncomfortable feeling which is very much his style.

Members of this high-level session will not get too hot and push tempo to un undesirable extent. IMHO, bassist hols the key.

This is a great video. I have had the pleasure of recording with James Williams, and it was an awesome experience. A master soloist and accompanist!
