Charles Ives: FUGUE IN FOUR KEYS on The Shining Shore (1896) performed by CHAMBER LEAGUE. Arranged for wind ensemble by CLYDE YASUHARA. Conductor: Christine Thomas. Personnel: Robert Gilmore (flute), Kristen De Soto-Madson (oboe), Elizabeth Gray (clarinet), Dan Plonsey (alto saxophone), Chuck Hinson (bassoon), Cindy Deane (horn), Thomas Dambly (trumpet), Tom Yoder (trombone), Phil Becker (tuba) and Clyde Yasuhara (contrabass). Taped live on August 10, 1996 at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco (Please pardon the background noise created by falling water in the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Fountain).

  • What a beautiful arrangement and performance. Amazing sound, considering. Thank you.

  • It's a little bit too short really, ad doesn't have the grandeur of the first string quartet fugue, which works much better in its symphonic setting than the quartet version. I agree though it is an utterly brilliant litle fugue - ravishingly beautiful - though there may have been a few wrong notes here!

  • One wonders why Ives didn't use this fugue instead of the one from the first string quartet for the 4th Symphony. This is great!
