The PAPER Series
So in lieu of writing a paper for my English class, I have the option to cover songs that have to do with the book, and explain the connection. The book is called "Brave New World."
When Bernard and Lenina get to The Reservation, they are disgusted with how "unnatural" the people are and their way of living is. On The Reservation, the way they live is like the way we do in our society today. Bernard and Lenina are used to the way the World State is run (people being conditioned, people having one main purpose and being happy only pursuing that purpose, people having sex with as many others as they wish... all that jazz.) On the Reservation, people are married, they have kids, people whip themselves in public, people are old (people in the W.S. die at the age of 60, and show no signs of aging.)
This song can connect to the book because of that. The way I see it is that this song is the savages telling Bernard and Lenina to "come close" and see their world.
"Come close (this is who we are)"
It's also an invitation for Bernard to be more himself, without the pressures of conforming to what everyone in the W.S. want him to do.
"Remind yourself that they are the ones who will hold you still."
"Come close, you can be yourself again."
Finally, it could be viewed as John trying to tell Lenina that he doesn't love her the way she loves him.
"Now you've found love, it's shining through"
"I know it's not love, but I've been trying (as we are waiting). I've been trying to let you know, so come close..."
I know this isn't my best at playing the song. It was like my seventh or eighth time playing through it, so I was sweating like no other and I was tired. I know I messed up the final drum solo leading into the outro. Oh well. I did my best, though!
