@fatmaninbearsuit Erm, Nico beats Lou Reed's ass, here, there and everywhere

I dislike Nico so much that i never listened to this song, it's a shame. With Lou's voice it's so much better. Nico with her stupid accent and looks, all fake, what a contrast with Reed and Cale. If Nico was a choice by Warhol, it would be because of the visual aspect, Warhol had nog clue about music nor interest.

Wow, that's terrific. Very different from the album version. Has that great "high, lonesome" sound that was, strangely enough, very common in Manhattan in that era. By the way, who is the second voice here -- is it Sterling or John?

I'm so used to listening to all the takes and I keep waiting for Lou to say, "fucking shit"

I disagree Fatman, for years I liked some of Lou Reed's stuff and didn't really like other stuff (ie Berlin) - it was ages before I realised that it was VU that I liked and Lou Reed just happened to be involved in their albums :) pretty stupid of me but it proves a point I hope.

Her songs with the VU were good but her solo material? not so much.
i personally believe that recruiting nico was a big mistake. she turned several classic lou reed songs into personality-less borefests. in my opinion what made the velvet underground so great was only confirmed by lou reed's energetically sung lead vocals. despite the influence of john cale, the velvet underground WAS lou reed's band

@fatmaninbearsuit I like her personality-less sound :)

I am glad Lou gave this to Nico. His vocals aren't as powerful as Her germanic tone. I love Lou. But i prefer Nico's voice to this song.

@taty4ever Lou Reed is one of the greatest song writers of the 20th century but his voice I think can be definitely be surpassed for some tracks. And he respected that- take this song, or perhaps After Hours which had Maureen Tucker singing. I agree with you that Nico's voice suited this song too.

That's why this version is a 'demo'.

Demo = short for demonstration. Unsigned artists often produce "demo tapes" or "demo records" to send out to record companies, producers etc. to get their interest. A demo version will usually be the raw sound of the band, without studio finishing. If you read the description top right you can read about the history of these VU demo tapes.
