39&Rising

Inspired by the average summer temperature in the UAE and the nation's forthcoming 39th birthday, 39&Rising is a visual road trip through the Emirates, featuring the number 39 interspersed with 39 images of Sheikh Zayed, the father of the nation, as they appear in our daily lives and collective memory. A team of six Emirati and expat multimedia journalists shot 39&Rising entirely in HD during the high heat of summer 2010 using the Canon 5D Mark II stills camera and edited the images together with archive footage and photography. The result is a short film that explodes with the colour and energy of a country that in 39 years has risen from the sand dunes of Arabia to become a major player on the global stage.

39&Rising was created for the YouTubePlay/Guggenheim Biennial of Creative Video and this is the first time it has been uploaded and shown online.
