In which I briefly discuss the mounting tensions between Israel and Iran and the war that may follow.
CORRECTION: Israel was established following World War I not World War II

Israel is doing what is necessary to protect itself. I guarantee if the US was in Israel's position, you would not be saying these things. No matter what Israel does, they either get bombed, or the world hates them - they will obviously choose to defend themselves.

Hopefully some of these points will actually be addressed by you, Dan:

Ahmadinejad did say the following: "Our dear Imam said that the occupying regime [Israel] must be wiped off the map and this was a very wise statement" (nyti[dot]ms/vXk9w2)

I think given that it's easier to see Israels point in not wanting Iran to have swords in battle, don't you? True Israel has nukes, but has never pledged to destroy another nation.

I respect your presentation of issues but see both sides and all facts.

Israel is a complicated situation over a hundred years in the making. As I understand it, didn't the Jews originally (1920's) start buying land from the Arabs? Then, later, defense militia's were set up to defend the legally purchased land from radical Arabs. Many Jews had to flee somewhere during world war II and the area of Israel was often a destination. I say the Arabs need to accept that Israel is a thing. No simple black and white analysis is proper for such a complex situation.

Despite already knowing all of it, it was nice to see it repeated by someone with a cool painting on their mantelpiece.

Of course. As I said it is not legitimate. But it also wasn't legitimate in the first place when Israel "won" the lands. And the difference is that about Germany, the war ended, but about Israel and Palestine, the war (or at least conflict) is still going on. It's not as you put it, "after the war". And in some sense it's like fighting someone and getting pissed off if they fight back. Well, it's okay if you get pissed off, but you shouldn't expect much sympathy.

Think about it this way: Germany lost land as a result of WWII. If they started launching rockets into neighbouring countries after the war, upset about their loss of land, wouldn't you expect those countries to defend themselves? Would you still be sympathetic towards Germany? This is just an example, of course - the most memorable instance of a country losing land after a war.

While, of course, I'm not a fan of radical Palestian action, we should call these actions what they are - acts of war. What I don't understand is why the world gets so upset when Israel defends itself. Building settlements is one thing, but defense of your country is another. The world shouldn't get so sympathetic towards a group of people that rightfully lost its land in a war (in which Israel was outnumbered 7 countries to 1) and will commit heinous crimes to get it back.

1-About the sanctions, you're right, that's horrible. 2-The second paragraph is severely biased in an unhealthy way. Israel "won" land in war (as if that kind of winning is EVER legitimate, especially in RECENT history) and since they "won" it, it's now their right, but if Palestinians want to do the exact same thing to get their land back, it's wrong. Well, it seems like you guys are still at war, if it was legitimate then, it is legitimate now. But it's not legitimate now, as it wasn't then.
