The South Chicago neighborhood was recently reported as one of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods with violent crime climbing to frightening levels. The South Chicago Art Center, a local not-for-profit that provides after-school art classes for area kids, addressed the problems of gangs and violence with a mural project that started in May of 2007 with 16 teenagers and lead artist Brother Mark Elder, a DePaul University Professor and muralist.

The mural was put up in November 2008. Quotes will be added in the spring of 2009.

  • There's a section on the mural, actually not shown here, that looks like an erect penis and all of the ying yang shapes around it look like sperms. Anyone see that?

  • what is name of the song?

  • I would invite you soutsiderriffraff to go down to the S. Chicago Art Center . There you can see where the balance and intentions are. All are welcome!

  • Cats and Dogs for balance does not sound South Chicago bro. Might not be the artists intention but those who sponsored the mural want to increase the value of their property. I would bet that the children of the art center did not decide they wanted to paint a mural nor did they design it. I would bet the artist isn't from the area nor are the art center employees. Public art projects like this are always a prelude to gentrification, always have been - it is you my friend who are misguided.

  • Sorry Southsideriffraff, Looks like you have been misinformed as to what this mural is doing. The Cats and Dogs are about balance, and how we all need to find a way to get along. Doing community sponsored public art does not feed into 'gentrification'. Never did. This mural was a response by the students at S.Chicago Art Center to the amount of gang violence going on. Sorry you feel the way you do but that is not the intent of this mural. Buffalo Bro

  • Another example of whats going on in South Chicago. Residents have no say in these things, but development corporations like Claretian Associates, SEDCOM, and the South Chicago Chamber of Commerce do. All these groups are very politically connected - this is an example of the machine at work. They are putting up these murals to try to market the area while they are steady pushing us out.

  • Parachute cloth!

  • God bless you
