Jack Buck, the long-time voice of the St. Louis Cardinals, who also called Missouri football games, describes the 1969 Missouri football season. Led by quarterback Terry McMillan and All-American WR Mel Gray, Missouri shared the Big 8 Conference title that year with Nebraska and played Penn State in the 1970 Orange Bowl.

  • back in 73 i was in salt lake city and attended a pro track event. it featured a 40 yd dash between Mel Gray and Bob hayes. gray was a legit 9.2 100 man and hayes was 30 running against a young gray. hayes won and recorded a 4.3 electronic, i've always wondered how fast he could have run the 40 in his rookie season?

Interesting. I knew Mel placed high in the NCAA sprint events while he was at MU (1968-70), but I didn't know that he continued to run track after college. By 1973 he was playing pro football with the St. Louis Cardinals. I guess he ran track in the off season. Thanks for your historical comment.

  • Ike-

Glad you enjoyed it. This particular clip was taken from a video made in 1990 to commemorate 100 years of MU football. I think the reason you hear Harry on some of this clip is due to the fact that Harry narrated the MU yearly football highlight film and much of the video used for the 1990 piece was taken from those old highlight reels. Funny story about Pepper Rodgers and Dan Devine, but I can tell you that it is was just that -- a funny story made up by Pepper for a speech he gave.

  • Thanks Erk. Glad you enjoyed it. Fun season. I was 14 at the time.

  • 54Snickers: it wasn't "track" for gray and hayes it was a short lived pro track circuit that lasted like 3 yrs. they started paying these track athletes like bob seagram, brian oldfeild, wyomia tyus, and at every meet(i also was at the one in 73 at madison square garden where hayes beat rocky thompson richmond flowers and eddy bell in a 40(thompson won the european 100m championship in 10.1 the yr before)they had the "football 40:hayes won 14 of 15(he lost a photo finish to a young cliff branch)

  • This was one heckuva football team as I recall.

  • In the background on several occasions you can also hear Harry Caray describing the action. It was after the 1969 baseball season that the Cardinals fired him. Harry had done Mizzou football for many years.

I believe it was this KU-Mizzou game where Pepper Rodgers said he gave Devine the peace sign and Devine allegedly returned only half of it.

Great film. Also love football back when it was played on real grass.

  • Good stuff.
