MCCAIN: "A few weeks ago at a town hall meeting, we really had a lot of questions about Pakistan and how it's faded from the front pages. I just want to make a comment and that is thanks to this President's diplomacy, Musharraf is doing most of, if not everything that we want him to do. He has stepped down as head of the military, he has declared elections, he is lifting martial law. His opponents have come into Pakistan and they're going to have an election. Is it a perfect situation? No, but I want to point out that the democrats were all saying, "threaten Musharraf, you got to cut off aid, get tough with him." But we did some quiet but very effective diplomacy, that I think has brought about most of the measure that have been taken that we've saw. Why do we care about Pakistan? I think you know why [...]"
