Anyone who is heading off to the North East coast of the UK might find this bit of local culture interesting. Every Boxing Day the Flamborough Sword Dancers dance outside the various pubs around Flamborough Head.
I saw the Flamborough sword dancers in the Royal Albert Hall, probably in 1953 or 1954 and can clearly remember them lifting their swords in the classic shape that is the emblem for the English Folk Dance and Song Society. We had that emblem in a tile over our fire place as my parents were both members of the EFDSS.
@davenachfan A cloggy background eh? I live a long way away from Flamborough but my parents are still there so every year I get the Boxing Day ritual of standing around in the drizzle with a pint in hand waiting for the guys in the ganseys.
