Minimovie about the Monorail Suspension Railway "Schwebebahn" in Wuppertal, Germany.

The Wuppertal Schwebebahn is a suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germany. Its full name is the "Eugen Langen Monorail Suspension Railway" (Einschienige Hängebahn System Eugen Langen). The people of Wuppertal know it, however, as the "Old Lady" ("Alte Dame") or the "Steel Dragon" ("Der stählerne Drache"). Designed by Eugen Langen, who originally planned to build it in Berlin, it was built in 1900, opened in 1901 and is still in use today as a local transport system in the city. It is the oldest monorail system in the world.

The suspension railway travels along a route 13.3 kilometres long, about 12 metres above the surface of the river Wupper between Oberbarmen and Sonnborner Straße (10 km) and approximately 8 m above the city streets, between Sonnborner Straße and Vohwinkel (3.3 km). At one point the railway crosses the A46 motorway. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes.

  • bei 3:14 ist Oberbarmen juhu in der nähe wohne ich lol

  • Great system!! Nice video clip..

Wish my city had suspended trams, they look fun to ride.

  • It looks like coming from far future, no need for tracks in straight line on the ground, beautiful views, the feeling of being suspended is cool enough, they make sharp turns easily...

And this started in Germany in 1901?! WTF Germans rule

How come this is not the standard all over the world?!

  • Yeah...my city....and she´s beautiful!

  • Of course, This old version. I found the Youtube link is Zxp2ktR0ZuU put in the search box called "Skytrain Düsseldorf International" video are much better than old. This can be switch a rail and less cost the built over head rail. Good think !!

  • Two very similar systems near Tokyo. Like this one they are too noisy and very ugly. I prefer the straddle beam from the noise and aesthetics point of view.

  • monorail travel is the new heroin everybody.

  • @Metrolinkvideo I never knew there were monorails in the Rhein-Rhur metropolis and i'm living next door in Belgium ....But i like them a lot! :D
