Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 -- June 5, 2004) was the 40th President of the United States (1981--1989) and the 33rd Governor of California (1967--1975).

Born in Tampico, Illinois, Reagan moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1930s. He began a career as an actor, first in films and later television, appearing in 52 movie productions and gaining enough success to become a household name. Though largely a B film actor, some of his most notable roles are in Knute Rockne, All American and Kings Row. Reagan served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and later spokesman for General Electric (GE); his start in politics occurred during his work for GE. Originally a member of the Democratic Party, he switched to the Republican Party in 1962. After delivering a rousing speech in support of Barry Goldwater's presidential candidacy in 1964, he was persuaded to seek the California governorship, winning two years later and again in 1970. He was defeated in his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 as well as 1976, but won both the nomination and election in 1980.

As president, Reagan implemented new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics", were aimed at controlling inflation and spurring economic growth through tax cuts, reduced business regulation, and reduced growth in government spending. In his first term he survived an assassination attempt, took a hard line against labor unions, and ordered military actions in Grenada. He was reelected in a landslide in 1984, proclaiming it was "Morning in America". His second term was primarily marked by foreign matters, such as the ending of the Cold War, the bombing of Libya, and the revelation of the Iran-Contra affair. Reagan supported anti-Communist movements worldwide and spent his first term forgoing the strategy of détente by ordering a massive military buildup in an arms race with the USSR. Reagan negotiated with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, culminating in the INF Treaty and the decrease of both countries' nuclear arsenals.

Reagan left office in 1989. In 1994, the former president disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier in the year; he died ten years later at the age of 93. He has been rated highly by scholars in rankings of U.S. Presidents.

  • @vgcq02 The modern day Republican party is full of hypocrites.

  • How on earth do we keep electing these idiotic conservatives? We're still paying the price for Reagan's "voodo economics". We keep hammering away at labor unions and things get worse, we keep cutting taxes for the wealthy and things get worse, we keep spending on a bloated military and things get worse. When will we learn?

  • Lies? "I did not have sex with that woman. I did not tell anyone to lie, not one time. These charges are false." -William Jefferson.

Former Democratic Prosecuting Attorney David Schippers-Voted for Clinton twice and his son in law is the Chairman of the Cook County(Chicago) Democratic Party: "Yes, Nixon was bad, but, Bill Clinton was so much worse."

  • I guess Rich Teddy with a silver spoon in his mouth did not want to pay his fair share. In addition, the Kennedy's convinced many poor farmers to sell away the rights to oil on their land, for pennies on the dollar. I know, my Dad worked for John Kennedy. Bill Clinton had stocks in power plants, while lecturing us about the evil of power plants. Double standards, anyone?????

  • Bill Clinton made the same speech about WMD's as did George W. Bush. So, Bill told the truth and Bush lied??? Republicans are hypocrites??? Your friend, Teddy Kennedy started the movement to HMO's. Yet, when it came to his health care, Teddy Boy was at the head of the line. Did Teddy wait in line as he expected everyone else to do??? No! In addition, t he Kennedy estate is incorporated in Fuji, cheating the United States Government out of millions of tax dollars.

  • First, the pushing of individuals who were mentally ill was done during the reign of your pals, the Democrats. My mom was a Psych RN when it happened. I would hope you would get your facts straight. You might want to go into how your good friend Bill Clinton sold our latest military technology to Communist China. As stated by Jesus, "the poor will always be among you." So, why does your buddy Obama not get these people off the streets???

  • Tarted a bogus war in granada after the unarmed marines in lebanon he had sent were killed by a suicide bobmer. Financed unauthorized guerrilla war in central america with profits of cocaine smuggled into the u.s. By the c.I.a. Hmmm. Emtied thousands of mentally ill patients onto the streets by closin sanitariums.wHat a guy.he truly is what right wing reps down to the bone. No wonder he's their hero. Hed be mine too, if I were a rep.
