@buckfan1969 I know what you're saying I was at the games "Wayne the Wall" played for the C's in Boston.Embry 5-time All-Star (1961-65) champion with the Celtics(1968) First African-American NBA GM with Milwaukee,1971-79 Sporting News NBA Executive of the Year,1992 and 98. Inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame as a contributor.A real gentleman.NBA's first African-American team president with the Cavs in 94. The Sporting News named him NBA Executive of the Year in 1992 and 1998.
@geocgeo I googled it, and turns out you're right. It must have been 1966. Memory plays tricks after all these years, I guess. But the incident I described did happen.
Wayne Embry was on the Cincinnati Royals before he was on the Celtics.Embry was talked out of retirement by his friend Bill Russell, the new player/coach for Boston. Wayne Embry was part of the Boston Celtics 1968 NBA championship team.
@buckfan1969 For anyone here not impressed by no "6'8" center, Embry was solid as a rock, gifted with the physique of Mike Tyson. And 6'8 = 6'10 via today's inflated "list height" inflation. He's actually the same height as Bismack Biyombo measured in the NBA draft this year (6'8.31") and is actually an inch taller than Big Ben Wallace measured in his barefeet (6'7)... Embry woulda made both of those guys look like toothpicks too... Wilt was a freaking monster if he moved Embry like that
I grew up watching Wilt, and had the chance to sit behind the backboard in '67 when they played the Cincinnati Royals (remember them?). Royals had Wayne Embry at center; a 6'8", 280 pound bruiser. Embry would lay on Wilt, trying to push him away from the basket. At one point Chamberlain made a motion similar to a man adjusting his cuff, and Embry was slammed into the stanchion. In 50+ years of watching sports, I've never seen anyone as strong in ANY sport as Wilt. Babe Ruth of the NBA.
@jamal2021 Terminator says Wilt got his bench press up to 500 in the late 70's, when he was past his prime. Shaquille (or Shawuille) only got up to 450 in his PRIME.
Wilt would destroy today's,yesterdays and other era's centers game after game..There will never be anyone close to the size,strength and skills Wilt had...He was a track and field star,played for the globetrotters..The only thing he was weak at was free throws ...
@conanbdetective never mind damn near every player russell played with was hall of fame, really, do you really think that wilt would not have won as many championships with those teams russell played on?

@0521Steven
Strength is the absolute last thing to leave, plenty of people bench their highest after 40.
