Yeah, I was told by someone that it was started back then with teachers not being able to understand deaf students' fingerspelling so they had them sign first and last name separately and also sometimes interpreters cannot read fingerspelling too. Sigh..
Your niece is really cute, kids come up with cute signs. even today my kids still use a few of their baby signs. lol!!
