Zheng He Chinese Ship Visits Hawaii Navy News This Week

In April 1989, the Peoples Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) training ship Zheng He made a visit to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It was the PLA's first-ever port visit to a US port since the 1949 Communist Revolution. The DAXIN AXT-81 Zheng He's sailors visited with their American counterparts and traded souvenirs, played in a basketball game and enjoyed local Hawaiian entertainment. The Chinese sponsored their own entertainment event for the Americans as well.

* side note: as the ship was leaving its berth I was taking some still photos for a print story about the visit and saw one of the Chinese sailors who we had met while doing the NNTW piece. He was manning the rails and everyone was lined up in uniform. As the ship moved away from the pier, he suddenly broke rank and quickly ran to the side of the ship and tossed something at me. I barely caught it. It was a small porcelin cat figurine. How cool.
