Virtualdub is kind of cool for making stop motion, and it's completely free. (Not exactly the intended use, but it's great at stringing sequential images.) Using the Xvid codec, it even supports HD image dimensions. (Other codecs may too, but I've had the most luck with that one. And like Virtualdub both the Xvid encoder and decoder are free.) Virtualdub is Windows only though, so I guess that's a bit unfortunate if you're on a Mac.

@computerwolfe5 well i dont have mac is istopmotion work on windows based computers? I broke my mac :(

@computerwolfe5 all you need to make a stop motion movie, by using the cameras Stop Motion movie maker, is photos. it doesnt matter how u take the photos, just the fact that you hav them on your camera. and is saves as an as. the movie is an avi i think. the resolution of the product is bad though, i would not recommend using it

@computerwolfe5 with iStopMotion, you have a high resolution picture, as many fps as u want, and it can import as many pictures as u want. Although it is shareware, meaning you have to pay for it, you can just keep on asking to use the demo and u will have free usage of the program. Hope this helps!

@computerwolfe5 ya u can or u can use a program that i use called iStopMotion. i recently compared the one on the camera to making on in iMovie. iMovie has higher resolution, but only 6fps and can handle as many pictures as u want. the one on the camera can only do 100 pictures at a time. while you can play it at a faster fps lik 15, you lose resolution though. iStopMotion is an software you can download onto a mac and is basically both.

@fishingfreek105 okay, but can you make stop motion in the camera, with the one thats buitl in without using intervals? And what kind of file do these save as?
-
@computerwolfe5 you can do either. in this situation, i wanted to be in the movie and i dont trust my friends with my camera, so i had it in interval shooting. we moved everytime we hear the shutter go. in the third stop motion, i was on the camera and manually took the pictures. really all you need for a stop motion is a bunch of pictures so the form u take them in doesnt matter. u just need a bunch of consecutive pictures, throw them into a movie editor, i just started using iStopMotion, done
Very creative - like it. I am about to delve into time lapse with my D5000, how many shots in total was this? Did you have external power to the camera or was it on battery?

@thedavidkendall I shot this a while ago, so I dont really remember, but I think its playing at 6 fps so that would put it around 600 pictures. Now when I shoot time lapses, I go for between a thousand and two thousand pictures played at 24 fps. I edit with Quicktime Pro, and I'm trying to find a movie editing software that can export in 1080p.

@thedavidkendall For time lapses I use and interval, but for stop motion I have someone on the camera. For this specific one I put it on interval because we didnt have enough people to have a person on the camera, but for almost all of the stop motions there is someone on the camera. I do not recommend using the in-camera stop motion movie creator because of its low resolution output. With time lapses I use an external intervalometer.
