A small but intense waterspout developed on the bayside of Sugarloaf Key, Florida (in the lower Florida Keys)_ on the afternoon of August 5, 2008. The needle-like funnel produced a small but violent spray ring that moved very slowly, impacting a small fishing boat a couple of times over the course of a few minutes, throwing debris off the decks into the waters of Florida Bay.

  • have u ever seen a multiple vortex waterspout

  • @AJTwister97 .

Yes, the spray ring is made up of several multiple vorticies and I have also seen may in dustdevils.

  • Amazing video. Thank you for sharing it. I wonder why the large boat and the smaller boat didn't get out of there right away.

I still have very pleasant memories of a Summer vacation my family and I spent on Sugar Loaf Key years ago.

  • Those boats were tied up there so it would probably take too much time to leave the area. As you can see there were a couple of people on board but I think they were quite startled when this spuot decended on them.

  • To be a person that you catch storms professionally, knows not burn properly, use a tripod and therefore cease to move the camera when they're filming, much bothers see an image and that this is moving constantly ;).

The waterspout is my favorite, fantastic objects sucking vortex of that boat, I'd love to meet within that whirlwind of spray, it must be a marvel live a waterspout as its video :).

  • I agree with regards about the tripod. I was with a Discovery Channel crew and we were figuring that the chances for a waterspout were about zero at this point so we were at the tiki bar relaxing from a days hunting for spouts. I luckily kept my camcorder with me as it would have been too hot in the locked car. The tripod was in the car but it was too far away and chances are the waterspout would not wait for me to go get it.

  • These things are like ghosts.

  • holy crap where they cool did they made it

  • I have a question. Is it considered a waterspout if doesn't have a funnel? I was fishing during an extremely hot weather with no clouds in the sky and something similar like that in ur vid appeared.

  • Yes. Look up "Aerial tornado footage" on Youtube and the first video will show an example.

  • It's not intense... I was expecting an F1 at the minimum when I read "intense" in the description.

    Meh, it's still cool.

  • yes. waterspouts become tornadoes when it reaches the land. the opposite goes when reaching open water.

  • do waterspouts and tornadoes ever go from land onto water or vice versa?
