I always thought that this was one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the film if you look into it, he looks at the Duke with such a painful forced smile, it's like he hopes that the Duke will be merciful on him because he's his favourite but inside he knows nobody is coming to save him, you can actually see his spirit breaking, now he's just kissing and smiling to keep him happy.
