Rikin Gandhi is a researcher with the technology for emerging markets team at Microsoft Research India and chief executive officer of Digital Green. His interests include sustainable agriculture and technology for socioeconomic development. Mr. Gandhi received a masters in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelors in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to his days in rural India, he was a software engineer at Oracle and a pilot with aspirations for joining the astronaut program. Born and raised in the U.S., he reverse-migrated" to India to help start a biodiesel venture on the wastelands of Maharashtra. Since 2006, he has led the research and development of the Digital Green system to agricultural extension at Microsoft Research and showed that the system is at least 10 more effective, per dollar spent, than classical approaches. Mr. Gandhi will be resigning from his position at Microsoft to serve as CEO of Digital Green. He looks forward to seeing organizations use the Digital Green system to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across the developing world.
