7/19/2011 - Drove north out of Santa Fe towards Los Alamos, NM. The main Bandelier National Park was mostly closed due to fire and flash flooding in the Frijoles Canyon. I drove back towards Los Alamos and stopped at the Tsankawi National Monument which is also located in Bandelier National Monument.

At Tsankawi I took a 1.5 mile loop trail walk along a mesa, viewing cavates, petroglyphs and the Ancestral Pueblo village of Tsankawi. Ladders are a required part of this trail. The trail is very exposed to the elements and should not be taken during localized thunderstorms.

In the summer, it is VERY hot and dry. I would strongly suggest good walking/hiking shoes, a couple bottles of water, and a hat.
