  • @volvo4377 They could have stopped the river traffic north of Stalingrad without feeding a veteran army into a death pit. The industrial and rail centers could have been destroyed with artillery and bombers. Capturing the city was purely political.

  • to claim that the Red Army didn´t expect to fight in Stalingrad like the commentators do is wrong in every way. Several weeks before the Battle of Stalingrad started NKVD divisions had been transfered there to ensure that the defences where set up. The Red Army knew that Urban fighting where the only type of battle where they where clearly superior to the Wehrmacht and thus they wanted they battle to take part in Stalingrad.

  • One question,, why didnt the Germans go around the city? and maybe capture some prisoners.

  • @jackzero99 Stalingrad was a vital junction point. the Soviets were moving supplies and war materials up the Volga vast distances via the river and its secondary canals - one such canal that connected the Volga to the river Don. these 2 rivers and canals served a large part of the Soviet Union & even Eastern Europe with transport via barges. the city was also a vital rail center.

  • Hitler wasted 300,000 men to capture Stalingrad for no reason. Once the city was destroyed, why bother capturing it?

  • nineteen fought he won

  • 1:04 COD waw

  • Another big "crying shame" for the German Army group south was not being able to hold Rostov the first time they took it in November of 41. Can you imagine what a great starting point that would have been for the next summer campaign? Army group A had to use up a month to retake it.
