a) Recent approval, by FEMA, of the exclusion of two areas in Kalona from Zone A. The areas are two small (each less than 1 square mile) drainage basins. [See the map on SHUCKS.COM]. As a result 70 homes and 6 businesses will be removed from Zone A . After the exclusion, the following entities are in Zone A: 239 Single Family Homes; 100 Mobile Homes; 52 Businesses; roughly 35 percent of the community is in Zone A.
b) With the help of Rep Loebsack, FEMA has granted a 30 day extension for comments regarding the 2 excluded areas and an extension (length of time not yet known) for the effective date (before extension Sept 29 2011) of the FIRM (Flood Insurance Rate Map).
c) The Iowa Flood Center has agreed to pay the engineering costs of producing a Letter of Map Revision to FEMA for any large changes. If that is done, it would bring the value of the current contribution to the City by the Flood Center to approximately $80,000.
d) Should the City choose to pursue a "Detailed Study" for mapping, the informal estimated cost would be in the $40,000 - $60,000 range.
