Sonia Cameron knows nothing of the city's shocking past; she is here to dance. Seventy years earlier, the cafe is home to the close-knit Ramirez family. In 1936, an army coup led by Franco shatters the country's fragile peace, and in the heart ofGranada the family witnesses the worst atrocities of conflict. Divided by politics and tragedy, everyone must take a side, fighting a personal battle asSpain rips itself apart.
I did enjoy 'The Island' - it is a vivid account of life in Plaka, Crete and the tragic events that took place on the island of Spinalonga, a leper colony until 1953. I visited again a couple of days ago and even the master of the little fishing boat that took us across spoke of the book. Victoria Hislop's account leaves a lasting impression which you then cannot fail to recall as you wander the main street of what remains of the small village on the island today.
