I just realized that the question of "Is cockfighting okay" is not "Should you care about the suffering of chickens", it's "Should you care about dedicating resources to create the suffering of chickens for human amusement." These chickens are not really raised for food- they're raised to create suffering for human amusement, and are eaten when they die. More resources are dedicated to them than actual chickens raised to be eaten. It becomes more morally repugnant when that's taken into account.
