LaQuan Smith NEW YORK FASHION WEEK FALL 2010 Preview

Up-and-coming designer LaQuan Smith scored a key guest at his runway show yesterday morning: Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley.

What drew the legendary fashionisto to 21-year-old Smith's event?

"I'm here to embrace an African-American designer for his debut, because we need that diversity in the fashion world," Talley says of Smith, who taught himself how to make clothes on his grandparents' sewing machine in Queens.

"He's self-taught. I embrace the American dream that he wants to be a fashion designer."

You know Smith is sure to be big if the King of Fashion made time to take in the show. Noted Talley, with a laugh: "I said to my assistant, '[Clear] whatever I have to do Monday - I've got to go to that show."
