Video results for Dominican Republic Tarantulas - Big Spider Tarantula on my hand. That video has been seen more than 14.6 million times making it the #1 Most Viewed All Time Pets & Animals video in Canada and the #8 Most Viewed Video All Time Canada.
The tarantula was filmed in the Dominican Republic, I hope we have the chance to encounter more tarantulas in the wild during our next Dominican Republic visit. But the Island of Hispaniola and specifically the Dominican Republic has many more creatures and most are facing a difficult future due to mans encroachment.
22 species of bats have been known from Hispaniola.
American Crocodile
Haitises Striped Gecko
Rhinoceros Iguana Bahoruco Twig Anole Pale-bellied Curlytail Hispaniolan Boa various land snails (some quite colorful)

Butterflies & Moths - Dragonflies
Of the approximately 200 species of diurnal Lepidoptera on Hispaniola, some 75 species are endemic, largely among those groups that are weak fliers.
For example, there are about 30 species of satyrid butterflies in the genus Calisto that are endemic to Hispaniola. They all feed on grasses and fly weakly, low over the ground, and have thus produced locally distributed species on the island.
Conversely, the hawkmoths in the family Sphingidae are strong fliers, and so, of the 47 species that occur on Hispaniola, only 7 are endemic.

Cacata/ Tarantula and more....Dominican Republic does have it's share of spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, centipedes and other nasty, ugly yet amazing creatures. They are not readily seen, especially in the cities, but in the country they can be plentiful. They are nocturnal and are rarely seen in the daylight. .

More than 300 bird species have been recorded in The Dominican Republic, ..

The Hispainolan Hutia (Capromyidae)
This furry small mammal creature looks like a mix between a large guinea pig and a small ground hog, with some rat-like looks thrown in for good measure. They are only found on the islands of the Caribbean where they are, for the most part, the last indigenous living land mammal. Their walk is more or a waddle. When they are frightened this slow waddle can change into a fast high hop.

The word Manati came from the original inhabitants of the island the Taino Indians. They gave this marine animal its name. it was considered to be sacred.

Manatee (Trichechus Manatus)Manatees range in color from gray to brown. Their 2 small front flippers and their flat, horizontal tails are used to move them along the sea and river bottoms. They have very small eyes and no outer ears yet they are thought to see and hear quite good. The average adult can weigh from 1,500 to 1,800 pounds and can measure ten to 12 feet in length. They can live from 50 to 60 years in the wild and much longer in captivity. They are vegetarians and are quite gentle and slow moving.
The Antillean Manatee (pictured above), a Dominican Republic native, is one precarious survivor from a insane killing from the old Spanish colonizers who believed that Manatee meat was an aphrodisiac and had the taste of seven different kind of meats.
