@Jsmith858522 the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I love the way you visualize that your distros have no idea nor consensus on what the graphic interface should work like, and how guidelines should be drawn. This is also true for the idiocy of a gazillion different package distribution models that all do the same thing equally confusing and complex. I'm a unix pro and I have seen that Linux missed the desktop bus 5 years ago. It's just for embedded.

My battery life on my old crappy 3 year old dell is 4 hours running ubuntu with fluxbox.
