Agnus Dei (latin) ♱ Lamb of God

A name given to the formula recited thrice by the priest at Mass (except on Good Friday and Holy Saturday) in the Roman rite. It occurs towards the end of the Canon, after the prayer "Haec commixtio", etc. Having finished saying this prayer, the priest covers the chalice with the pall, genuflects, rises, inclines his head (but not his body) profoundly towards the altar and, with hands joined before his breast (and not, therefore, resting on the altar), says with a loud voice: "Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis" (Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy on us), repeats the formula unchanged, and still a third time, substituting now "dona nobis pacem" (grant us peace) for "miserere nobis", meanwhile striking his breast thrice, once at each "miserere nobis" and once at "Dona nobis pacem", with the right hand (the left hand resting throughout, from the first "Miserere", on the altar). In Requiem Masses, however, the formula occurs at the same part of the rite, but with the substitution of "dona eis requiem" (grant them rest) for "miserere nobis", and of "dona eis requiem sempiternam" (Grant them eternal rest) for "dona nobis pacem." In this case, the priest does not strike his breast, but keeps his hands joined before his breast throughout the whole formula.

Es el nombre que se da a la fórmula que el sacerdote recita por triplicado en la Misa según el rito romano (excepto el Viernes y Sábado santos). Se ubica al fin del canon, después de la oración haec comixtio, etc. Una vez concluida esta oración, el sacerdote tapa el cáliz con la palia, hace una genuflexión, se levanta, inclina su cabeza (no su cuerpo) profundamente hacia el altar y, juntas sus manos a la altura del pecho (o sea, sin colocarlas sobre el altar), dice en voz alta: Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis (Cordero de Dios, que quitas el pecado del mundo, ten misericordia de nosotros), repite la fórmula una vez más, sin modificarla, y otra vez, substituyendo el miserere nobis por las palabras dona nobis pacem (danos la paz), golpeándose el pecho con la mano derecha a cada miserere nobis y al dona nobis pacem (mientras la mano izquierda reposa sobre el altar). En las misas de réquiem, sin embargo, si bien la fórmula se repite en la misma parte de la Misa, se dice dona eis requiem (dales el descanso) en vez de miserere nobis y dona eis requiem sempiternam (dales el descanso eterno) en lugar de dona nobis pacem. En este caso, el sacerdote no se golpea el pecho, sino que permanece con las manos juntas durante toda la recitación.
