I too was at this game and have fond memories despite being on the wrong end of a drubbing. It was packed behind the goal and the Newcastle fans occupied some of the paddocks on both sides of the pitch, at the time the away following was estimated at around 10,000 in a crowd of 55k. The police kept opening extra sections to away fans as kick off approached. Our average home gate that season was about 25,000 not 9,000.
@razer4660 i was at this game. In fairness we took about 3/4 thousand which was a lot because back then we only had home att of about 9 thousand. Dark times back then even sunderland was a bigger club!!!
@charva1 if 12.000 geordies turned up they werent all in the ground. behind the goal held roughly 5.000 and the far side roughly 7.000 so for newcastle to have 12.000 would have to go on the far side right down to the stretford end which you can see they dont. id say about 7.000 still a good away turnout.
I was there in the Newcastle end, I remember them putting that temporary wooden barrier up on the side. It wasn't all ticket and remember they didn't expect 12,000 geordies turning up.
Hopefully see you again next season, Howay the Lads

Who was the Newcastle goalkeeper? Made a great save from Hughes when his team were 2-0 down.
