On 11-02-2010 the European Parliament rejected an agreement with the US on sharing information about bank transfers that was at tracking people suspected of being terrorists, also known as the SWIFT agreement.

With the Lisbon Treaty now in force, the European Parliament's rejection of the interim deal can be seen as a drive to ensure that its expanded powers are respected in practice. The Lisbon Treaty allows the parliament to decide jointly with EU governments on legal affairs, and the SWIFT vote happened to be the first opportunity for the deputies to demonstrate their new strength.

Therefore a standing ovation for the dutch parliamentarian Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, who achieved this.

  • @uluuz what do you mean sold us out?? Look at the vid, the EU (or Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert) prohibited the US for looking into our bank transfers.

  • Democracy is the political system in which every Law and rule that is valid in the society is a result of the free formed and confirmed will of the majority of the people.

In other words: Democracy is the political-economical system in which the LEGISLATIVE POWER belongs to the people.(This means that people vote-choose every law either it is about various social matters or about the productive relationships).

  • well the EU sold us out!

    for the people against this:

theres an online petition, please sign and spread the word, this is too important to ignore, its about freedom and privacy! no one has the right to snoop in our bank-accounts! , so please help out.

(i can't place actual links here, so in google you can put in this:

petition no exchange of bankdata, ........it should be on top of the page)

verspreiden die hap, tis mooi geweest!

  • @saintconnnor That's not true: Europeans' civil liberties were safeguarded to a greater extent in the new deal. It made a difference.

  • great speech, but in the end, it made no difference, america can still get the bank-data from any EU-citizen without a decent reason to do so, within the next couple days, so tough talk, VVD, but like always, nothing in the end but bullshit

  • sharing???

sharing would mean it worked both ways, and this treaty wasnt sharing, it was a 1-way deal
