KMCS-FM, better known as Mac 93.1 FM, is an Adult Hits (a.k.a Variety Hits) formatted Radio Station, located in Muscatine, Iowa. KMCS is currently owned and operated by Prairie Radio Communications, who owns 10 stations in 4 states, with corporate headquarters in DeKalb, Illinois.
Originally, 93.1 FM signed on in Muscatine in 1996 as KWCC, with a Country format. KWCC, better known as 93 Country, had LIVE LOCAL Personalities, a REAL news department, sports department, and more! Originally owned by John Schwandke's Muscatine Communications, John and his family sold the station to WPW Broadcasting in 2000. The Country format lasted for 5 more years, before flipping to Adult Hits (along with sister KZEG, 94.7 The Eagle in Clinton) as 93.1 and 94.7 Mac FM.
One of the things that many think is that the two stations (KMCS and KMCN) are a simulcast. As an employee of PRC, I can tell you that this is not that case. However, the Music is scheduled so that the same exact songs air within two minutes of each other on the two stations. Otherwise, most advertisements are different, weather forecasts are different, newscasts are different, and Sports Broadcasts are only heard in Muscatine.
While the Mac FM format is a Jockless format, you can still hear Muscatine Muskies sports broadcasts, as well as Iowa Hawkeye Football, Local News, Local Sports, and Weather Forecasts from WHBF-TV (Rock Island, IL) on KMCS. As for KMCN, I'm not sure what local stuff you can hear there. From time to time, we still have Remote Broadcasts on Mac as well.
While most of the Weather Forecasts are done via phone by meteorologists at WHBF-TV CBS-4 in nearby Rock Island, IL, there are times where the forecast may not be received in time for it to be put into AudioVAULT for it to air. When this happens, somebody has to record it in house (normally yours truly or Davis Schrock). Davis Schrock is the young man who recorded it on this day. Davis is best known as the Sunday Morning Host on sister KWPC-AM 860. Yes, while KMCS is Jockless, there are still LIVE and LOCAL On-Air People on KWPC.
Mac FM has been on 93.1 FM for over 6 years now, and you never know, it may go to something else in the future. As much as we say we won't miss it, we will at some point if/when it's gone.
The voiceover is George Lowe.
