44 years ago this month, the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia ended state bans on interracial marriage in the 16 states that still had such laws. Now the courts are once again grappling with denial of equal marriage rights — this time to gay couples.

Robert A. Levy is the Chairman of the Cato Institute and presented the libertarian case for respecting an individual's right to marry whomever they wish at a Policy Forum on marriage equality at Cato on May 18th.

  • finally - now if more conservatives could just rid themselves of their CRAZY counterparts in the religious right, we could return to the Barry Goldwater years

  • NO, there should simply be a right to marry and no limit to whom we can choose to marry other than, for example, you can't marry a minor or animals. So if in a state a minor is anyone below the age of 16 then marrying age in that state is 16 (for example), but mostly it means 18 years of age. So if I meet a chinese man who is 40 and I want to marry him I can but if I like an 18 year old girl I can marry her instead. Polygamy would be banned, though technically, that should be legal too

  • Levy stole my line! Out of our wallets and out of our bedrooms is my line (circa 1995)

  • dude looks like an alien!

  • Its not the government's business to decide what two consenting adults do with each other. Get the state out of the marriage business entirely which also includes the goodies that the state deals out for getting married.

  • @denus0123 I am a Christian yes, just so you know where I come from at the start but I was referring to Mother Nature as in the natural order of Life. Homosexuality "is" a perversion of Nature. Disagreeing with that fact does not change that it is a "Fact".So you think Animals are Equal to Humans? You have no control over your "Instinctual" self like an Animal? So I guess when someone comes into your territory you rip them apart or fight some stranger for a gal/guy you fancy for a mate etc...

  • @Synapticsnap Is that capital "n" Nature to refer to an unknowable, undetectable Trinitarian God whose nature *does* differ by religious belief with no arbitration method to determine who's correct or not, or small "n" nature to refer to the natural state of a world in which many animals practice same-sex sexual behaviours?

  • OK so let's also allow Incest, Pedophilia and all other perversions of Marriage that are or can be consensual. Don't you people dare even dare to berate my "Standards" of "Morality" just because yours differ from mine or you are a "Hypocrite". If Government or Society can have No say in how it's Citizens behave themselves, then there is NO reason to have a Government and we'll just live in Anarchy. Homosexuality is a Unnatural perversion of Nature itself regardless of anyone's Religious Beliefs.

  • very good video. The gov should not be involved in marriage
