Thank you for your reply. In fact, I didn't know about the difference in pronunciation between sung and spoken language; I understand that it applies to "English Latin". Usually, I've heard "eckshelsis"; the "tch" simply sounded odd to me. Also, I wouldn't speak for the "Western world", as Germans, French and Italians may pronounce it differently, especially given the fact that there is no "ks" cluster in Italian. Thx 4 broadening my knowledge, pax :)

Point well-taken. While you are a linguist, I am a professional classical singer and choral conductor. As you probably know, sung words are often pronounced differently that spoken words. The common way of pronouncing "excelsis" in the Western world is "ex-chel-sees". While it may be different in Poland, you shouldn't fault a singer for actually doing it correctly.

I happen to be a linguist, thus my Latin is not bad, though naturally I don't speak it fluently. There are several types of Latin pronunciation; in one, "v" is pronounced the way it is in English, in another as "w" (salve/salwe). What I was taught was to pronounce "x" always as "ks", like in "excellent". That's how it is taught in Poland, where I am from. Bene vale :)

You are indeed wrong. It is "Ex-chel-sees". Some lazy choral directors teach the "eggshell" method but it is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Actually, if you knew anything about sung Latin, that is absolutely correct. Perhaps some under-educated high school teacher taught you to say "egg-shell-seas", but that is totally wrong. Make sure you educate yourself before making snarky comments. It just makes you look foolish.

you think she's not trained? she was professionally trained since she was 7! if you're so much better than her why aren't you up there? why haven't you been such a big part of the entertainment world for 7 decades? back when she first started, only the best were known. nowadays it's all about looks. she has been one of the best for 70 years and will forever.
