On April 13, 2010, the Davis City Council took up the issue of proposed cuts to the city's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Among the proposed cuts was the Davis Bridge Educational Foundation, which was slated to be cut completely from the budget.
Davis Bridge is a program dedicated to improving the academic achievement of low-income Davis students, particularly those from Spanish-speaking households. Davis Bridge provides tutoring, computer access, school supplies, and after-school snacks to these students.
Students and community members packed council chambers to defend Davis Bridge. Among the speakers was Rochelle Swanson, who herself received CDBG assistance as a student at UC Davis. Rochelle spoke in support of Davis Bridge.
