do people need the federal government to organize/pay for those services, or would they self develop out of need/desire? it's simply a different idea of the role of government in our lives.
each President's song focuses on a single action. it was often hard to pick one.

On hypocrasy - true.
But if you mean expand exec. powers under Fed govt, then you mean Monroe. After all, it was Monroe who allowed Jackson to invade the Spanish territory of Florida w/o authorisation from Congress.
As for revenue, w/o taxes, u can't do "stuff" like have schools & hospitals or even police etc.Federal or not, people need services.
So Adams is author of Monroe Doctrine & U criticise him for tax but NOT the crimes against humanity w/ Genocide of NA Indians? why?

you can criticize protectionist tariffs without being a hypocrite about them...you just can't be a republican. JQA was the first President to broaden the reach of the federal government to a whole new level. we had federal income with the small levels of excise taxes we had back then. he just wanted a lot more money so the fed could do a lot more stuff.

W/ your criticism of tarrifs, you sound like the free market ideologues of today who talk about free trade & low taxes but then raise them. Ex: Reagan. He was most prtoectionist after ww2. Free market? That's mythology.
At any rate, you do realise that in 1825 there was no income tax & that revenue came from taxing imports? W/o that, thre'd have been no $.
Critise Adams? Then look at the Genocide he did to the Native Americans w/ Florida & Monroe Doctrine.

JQA was also a a bit of a pimp. He gave an AMerican girl to a Russian czar during a diplomatic visit. Another fantastic song!
Well increasing the federal government and building roads and infrastructure spending isn't the same as doing it today. We had a need for roads and colleges to help make us a great nation... he was an abolitionist and just a good man wanting to serve his nation. The corrupt bargain is a lie look at his character he kept federal workers who disagreed with him. Clay was just the best man for the job.

@sfafasfasfsa this project isn't designed to find ways to defend guys like JQA. Tons of evidence to do that. It's to point out how each and every President sucked. The tariffs weren't designed as a revenue increasing opportunity for infrastructure spending anyway. It was a protectionist move.

@sabai2024 Ever since Washington chose Hamilton's development plan over Jefferson's, protectionism and increased spending on infrastructure has gone hand in hand. JQA's tariff bill infuriated the slave states but helped develop and industrialize the country. If the founding fathers hasn't chosen Hamiltonian means of economic development like tariffs and state support for industry and infrastructure we'd still be a backwards agricultural society exporting fur and fish.

@Xenu Hey Larry, it's convenient to look back and say how much worse we'd be if we HADN'T done something. Without the tariff of abominations, we'd still be a "backwards agricultural society" today. Without the Civil War, we'd still have slavery today. Without the bailouts, we'd be even worse off.
