Understanding and Preventing Urban Youth Violence. In this session, Dr. Deanna Wilkinson reports on new findings from her recently completed National Institute of Justice study on event dynamics and the role of third parties in urban youth violence. She talks about three main themes: exposure to violence, identity/status, and isolation. Her research is based on in-depth interviews with 416 violent offenders from two disadvantaged neighborhoods in NYC. She joined on the panel by Steve Curl, regional director of the Ohio Department of Youth service parole authority, Jason Jenkins recruits African American mentors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Derrick Russell former gang leader and founder of the LIsten Good Youth; and Tamara Fournier, author and program director at Trinity Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio.
