Biagiotti2006, it's not "retarded." Debaters frequently go on to be very influential individual in whatever field they choose--be it politics, education, business, whatever. They KNOW that this is not the way to debate in front a general audience, just like lawyers KNOW not to use lawyer speak in discussing the law with non-lawyers. What speaking quickly does is focus the debate on ISSUES and allows very in-depth analysis. The point of the activity is the educate the students...

...and debate helps with that. College policy debate, with all of its strange speaking habits, also produces GREAT public speakers besides producing active minds. Substantial cognitive research indicates that this kind of process improves mental abilities. These students know so much about issues its scary. And the speed makes it fun and very competitive. Think of it like, say, lifting weights. That's not like lifting natural objects, but repeated, awkward lifts help improve strength.
