Iowa played both Miami and Washington in the1990 season. Of course both teams would essentially stay intact and go on to dominate the 1991 season. Iowa was even with Miami IN the 4th, IN Miami where they were in the middle of a historic home winning streak. We imploded with inexplicable turnovers on STs and lost 48-21. Washington just blew us out right away but we did make a good accounting of ourselves in the end. Bottom line: Washington was the better team. Miami wasn't that tough.

@hawkeyerecon Ah yes Marcus Coker. He wants to work at NASA and is now a double major: Astronomy and Physics! He seems to have have the right attitude and his priorities straight. Let's hope he keeps it that way and stays healthy.

@hotshot43 Nick could have caused some problems especially if we could have caught Washington's safeties in coverage. Their tendency to put safeties in man coverage could make them vulnerable to long runs up the middle. However that same weakness would be a strength against Miami and yes they would have routed Miami in 1991. Nick was a freak of nature. 255lbs who could run a 4.5 forty. I still get a smile whenever I think of him running roughshod over Illinois in 1990.

@mongoose704 Like you said, the team after the one Iowa faced in the Rose Bowl went on to go 12-0, rarely being tested. They may have had the best Defense in college football history. So yeah, Iowa got a tough draw that year. The 1991 team would have handled Miami if there was a BCS back then. Shame that no one ever got to see one of the greatest matchups in college football history. Still love Nick Bell though. :)

@mongoose704 I forgot it was 33-7 at half. The Huskies D that year and in 1991 (season) were vulnerable only one place, and that was right up the middle. Nick could have potentially caused UW some problems that day. You are right about losing to a pretty good team, they could/should have won the N.C. the year Iowa lost to them. They dropped a game at home to UCLA for no reason.

@hotshot43 but dang does that bring back memories. We shit ourselves in the first half and then made a furious comeback only to fall short. We felt awful but seeing that same Washington team utterly dominate college football the next year made it clear we were beaten by one hell of a team.

@hotshot43 We would have run Nick Bell more had we not fallen behind 33-7 at half and 39-7 early in the 3rd. That pretty much ended our running game. Still Nick Bell had a terrific game with nearly 150 yards rushing and receiving.

Great posting! Nick Bell was a great mix of power, athleticism, speed and balance. I hope Marcus Coker has seen this and is inspired to become a Hawkeye legend.
