Only the annual Strawberry Festival can draw more islanders together than a meeting to oppose linking Vashon / Maury Island to the mainland by a bridge. The absurd idea has been proposed about every twenty years by some individual, group, or company that live on the mainland or want to participate in its construction, but no islander has ever spoken in behalf of building a bridge. On September 9, 1996, the WA Dept of Transportation brought a bridge builder over to speak to 700 residents in the Vashon High School cafeteria and got the same response as four years before when 2,000 packed the gymnasium to roundly give them a vocal heave-ho.
