Anti-Ahmadiyah Violence in Cikeusik Indonesia

Reports coming from human rights activists in Iran indicate that during November and December 2010 nine arson attacks were carried out targeting Baha'i-owned business.

One of the victims was a Muslim owner of a coffee shop who was mistakenly identified as a Baha'i in a newsletter of Mahdi Ma`ud Cultural Foundation, which made him a target.

Alert for all Indonesian : Hardliners moslem have grown up and they make frequent congregation all over Indonesia that provoke people by spreading hatred toward other religion and moderate moslem. It becomes serious since they got support from high ranking officials of Indonesian government. This makes them immune from law and can do everything without fear. You may be safe now but we do not now in the future. Put pressure on Indonesian Government to protect minority and enforce the law again every hardliners group.
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that police and government officials failed to prevent the attack against Ahmadiyah members in Cikeusik, Pandeglang, Banten, on Sunday. He promised to penalize police and regional officials guilty of negligence in the attacks.


"We cannot tolerate this incident and it cannot reoccur," said Yudhoyono in a press conference at the Presidential office yesterday.


According to the President, the attack that killed three Ahmadiyah members could have been prevented. However, the preventive efforts made by the police were ineffective. "I want every party to be on alert and not underestimate the situation," he said.


The police, Yudhoyono said, should have actively taken preventive measures when signs of tension first appeared. "They should not wait for the clash to happen," the President said.


Ahmadiyah Indonesia spokesperson, Zafrullah Pontoh, said the murder on Sunday took place in front of the police. When 20 Ahmadiyah youths were chased by a thousand people, Pontoh said, the police remained still.


National Police Commission member, Novel Ali, agreed the police failed to protect Ahmadiyah members. "Their preventive and intelligence functions did not work well," he said yesterday.


Indonesian Police Chief Gen. Timur Pradopo, said he would penalize the perpetrators of the attack. "Whoever violates the law will be strictly punished," said Timur at the police headquarters yesterday.

Footage has emerged of a gang of Muslim men beating to death three members of the Ahmadiyah sect in Indonesia.

The attack has been condemned by rights groups and the government, but some say a 3-year-old law banning Ahmadis from spreading their faith incited the violence.
