MY MISTAKE. I don't know where I "thought" I read about DP being a Republican.
Her web site takes great pains to assure everybody she's in the middle.
BTW ...I think she equals JC on this song. Dolly's a genius any way you look at it.
Ella became a republican, along with Sammy and Frank (much to my dismay) but I still own hundreds of her cds and lps, and dvds and still her considered her the greatest ever
@taddyd1 yes, Baez paid a price, in terms of commercial success and awards, for sticking to her values, and it's to be commended. The Grammy people indeed snubbed her, but worse, IMO, is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which STILL hasn't inducted her. Every serious women musician of the last 40 years, from Emmylou to Tracy Chapman to Sheryl Crow, owe their careers to Baez (as they also do to Joni) for the artistic barriers she knocked down for them.
Not at all. She is actually guarded about discussing politics, and has never stated political affiliation, one way or the other. She's most likely an Independent. She was supportive of President Carter during the '70s, and in her autobiography, professed a love of JFK. She is associated with religion and old-time virtues, but on other hand, has also been very supportive of her gay following, and expressed a disdain for bigotry and narrow-mindedness. She is neither red nor blue. She is purple.
@taddyd1 I didn't know she supported Bush. You're right about Joan Baez' influence. Crystal Gayle was also influenced by Judy Collins though she probably doesn't share her politics; at least, Loretta Lynn doesn't. Ultimately, I don't really care so much what Dolly Parton's political persuasion might be, or anyone else's; it's the talent that counts most of all. Thanks for the info.
The reason I mentioned it is that in her hey day Baez had an enmorous effect (along with dylan and the byrds) in introducing mainstream American youth to country music, but she was never aknolwledged (in a positive way, that is) by Nashville. Now Olivia, Emmy, Linda R, Patty Loveless, R Cash now all site her. The NARAS wouldn't even give her a folk grammy even though she was by far the critics darling w/ top 10 lps (back when VERY few women had big hit lps).
She is a very $mart woman, and no diva, w/ any sense, turns on her gays. An especially ugly situation were a diva to sleep for decades in the same bed with her same sex "best friend." She has been EXTREMELY sweet and supportive of gays but to me, anyone who supports Geo Bush, rates a "redeck" tag, even my beloved dad. Sadly the Hatfields, Percys, Dirksons, Nel Rockefellers and Javitts (Imagine-all were were against the death penalty!) no longer exist in the Repblican party.
@taddyd1 Dolly Parton's father was a Republican and her mother a Democrat. The family fought a lot over politics. She herself is quite independent and has liberal views about women, gays and same-sex marriage, the environment, etc. If she is a registered Republican, she is in the camp of a Jacob Javitts, certainly not a redneck.

@meltzerboy
Dolly's return to bluegrass has heavily mined the early Baez catalog.
