I think its because songs like this really speak to the human experience, it makes you really love and care for the poor, the cast off, the downtrodden, the oppressed, this and Deportee are two of the best examples of this type of song.. like lyrical versions of Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle"

@ludditenomore I know all about Steve Goodman,which is why I asked the question.He did die in1984,and "The Shared Vision"tribute was done in 1988.My point is:the guy in the conductors hat is not Goodman.

fellow in the conductors' hat. magnificent spirit, humorist, singer- songwriter, instrumentalist, social interpretor and mentor. knew he was living on borrowed time and lived accordingly--died in 1984 of leukemia. check out his stuff and follow it if you can.
